‘A pike! A flipping pike!’ Adolphus thought to himself for the 83rd time that day. He didn’t even like fish! He realised it was futile and probably heretical to question his master’s methods or motives, but he just couldn’t help himself. This certainly wasn’t what he expected when he joined ‘Action for Change’, the underground group he thought would topple the arrogant nobles and greedy burgomeisters of his home city. Even when he got deeper into the organisation, and realised the true nature of the group, and began to understand the true meaning of change, he didn’t expect this. When he dedicated his life to his new lord, understanding more about what it might entail, he understood that he might be blessed with personal change, but had visions that he might be transmogrified into a mighty chaos champion. He still might, in time, he supposed, he just didn’t expect to follow a piscine route to glory. ‘Still, it could be worse’, he thought as he looked around his warband. The teeth might be taking a bit of getting used to, and the scales might be itchy when dry, but at least he could still think, walk and talk (even if his voice now came largely out of his gills.) Maybe that was why he had become the leader of this band, simply because he was the one best able to come up with a plan and tell others how they should do it? The same couldn’t be said for poor old Gustav, sat across the fire from him, who now seemed to have both the mental and speech capacity of a bird. A big difference from his former life as a magistrate. Still his beak was fairly lethal in a fight! And Glurk, so called because that was the only noise he/she could make, who had already been in the forest when Adolphus had finally fled there, had they ever been a human in the first place? Tentacles, eyes on stalks, possibly a hint of something bovine, Adolphus didn’t think he would ever know where Glurk came from. Still, the past was irrelevant, for their life was all about the victorious future they were helping to bring about for the glory of their master.
